Update: Some Irishmen and a Canadian moved into my house. Baños is still depressing although the road is no longer pure landslides. Argentina is freezing to death in the coldest winter in 89 years so I am re-thinking my travel plans. And, only two weeks left in Ecuador for now!

Yeah, speaking over a loudspeaker in a different language is really weird. I actually just gave a congratualations speech to my 11th graders at their graduation a few weeks ago. I started in English to thank my best students, but then busted into Russian to address the class-at-large. The second I switched over, everyone started screaming and clapping because somehow they thought that after 2 years, I spoke absolutely no Russian.
You're right, Ed, giving a toast in front of 10 people is nothing like booming your vioce out to be heard by hundreds of vilagers( I also found my voice to be more grading and annoying than it usually is. I blamed the p.a. system, but it could just be that I really do sound like that!)
